Fire Behavior & Smoke Modeling Workshop

This FREE workshop will provide hands-on training in the use Behave 7 fire modeling system and the BlueSky smoke modeling tool. Students will learn to use Behave 7 to evaluate fire spread, intensity, spotting potential, overstory mortality, and other key fire behavior characteristics under varying fuel, weather, and topographic conditions. Students will learn to use BlueSky to assess fire emissions, smoke transport, dispersion, and potential air quality impacts. Through realistic case studies and scenario-based exercises, students will integrate fire behavior and smoke modeling outputs to support prescribed fire planning, risk assessment, resource allocation, and operational decision making. Emphasis will be placed on interpreting model results, understanding model assumptions and limitations, and translating analytical outputs into actionable tactical and operational decisions for wildland fire management.
